In the course of working at a juice stand, Lilly Pulitzer, a socialite, found that squeezing fruits made a mess of her clothes. Seeking to camouflage the stains, Lilly asked her dressmaker to design a sleeveless shift dress made of bright and colorful cotton. Soon, Lilly quickly found that customers loved her dress, and had her dressmaker produce more in order to sell at her stand. Jackie Kennedy, the then First Lady, was one of the first celebrities to sport Lilly's trendy shift dress, and was featured in Life Magazine wearing one. Throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, Lilly's bright, bold, and well-made apparel became very popular and high-prized. Pulitzer’s line also produces Lilly bedding, men's clothing, children's clothing, maternity clothes, shoes, jewelry, and accessories. Today, the company maintains seventy Lilly Pulitzer Signature Stores. Lilly Pulitzer clothing also sells in major department shops such as Bloomingdales, Lord and Taylor, Nordstrom, and Neiman Marcus. Celebrities that have been seen in Lilly Pulitzer include actresses Julianne Moore, Angelina Jolie, and Cameron Diaz and model Brooke Shields.
