Mike Huckaby has taken the stage and here sits the Solomother, amazed at this oh-so American spectacle and wryly wondering what on earth this liberal girl is doing sitting here. Huckaby mentions the single mother paying 4 bucks a gallon to drive her second-hand car. What he so blithely ignores is the slippery slope trod by this current administration. Jesus, Elvis and FDR. What is this? Why do we have to all prove our working-class roots?

I get it. Bootstrap or perish.

I missed his call. I went with the banquet manager to straighten out a detail, and missed my son’s good night call. And so, instead, I got the daily report from my mother: our next door neighbor had stopped by for dessert and the Kid read her a Skippy John Jones book.

Even though I’ll work until 2AM, I’ve asked my mom to be sure he calls me before he goes to school. Who needs sleep when you’ve got love?

Picture this: open bar. Free food. Beautiful men and anorexic women. I must have missed the line where they gave out the pearls.

Smashmouth on stage. Pouring shots of Jaegermeister into audience members’ mouths. This was the RNC party I attended tonight. Problem is, I don,t have a clue who hosted the party, nor what their mission was about.

Smashmouth was amusing, but so loud I really thought my eardrums were going to burst… We left before they got around to playing their seminal Shrek hit. I’ve got a big day tomorrow. We don,t have a big name draw, but we are hosting an event that showcases what our organization and our community can do.

Here in the beautiful Twin Cities, we’re waiting to find out how the RNC will shake down under the impending threat od Gustav. The contrast between the people attending the two conventions. The DNC goers were rainbow hued and crunchy around the edges. The older Dems were unrepentant hippies; the young came from every fringe identity on the map.

Here in Minneapolis, the hotel hallways team with earnest young white men, buzz cuts and navy blazers equally neat and tidy.

I wonder what kind of idealist my son will become…
