Sometimes Low-Tech Works Best

kitchen floor Theres a little corner in my kitchen thats prone to collecting dirt. Its right beneath the lazy susan, beside the oven. That corner of the floor sometimes gets neglected when I sweep, especially when Im in a hurry. Today, I had enough of it, dropped a wet rag on it and scrubbed it clean with my foot. Easy. Clean. Done. I do have a Swiffer mop, but sometimes low-tech does a better and faster job. image via Google search Tags: cleaning, kitchen floor, Swiffer, kitchen mop, housekeeping, homemaking Share This

Organizing a Few Areas at a Time

clutter Ive been focusing on two areas of my home to declutter. I want these two to be organized for good, and for me to be able to maintain them. These are the kitchen island - which is such a hot spot for clutter! - and the dining table. For the island, the tabletop file has been working pretty well. I also added a box shallow as a catch-all for the papers and items that need to be sorted. I figure Id rather have this box, which I had covered in pretty paper, on the table than a mishmash of letters and whatnot scattered all over. The ideal way to deal with these items is not to let them accumulate at all. But sometimes, I cant get to them quickly enough and so they need a temporary place to stay. The dining table has been a general work area for my husband and I. Thus we had books, photos and other assorted items on it for a while. My solution is to turn to the shelves right next to it. I put away most of the books in order to clear one shelf. That shelf is now the project shelf, with a couple of boxes for putting away in-progress tasks. The table is now clear of clutter and is a much more welcoming sight. My next goal is to find a system to maintain these areas. If I can do this successfully, then Ill turn my attention to other areas in the house that need some organizing as well. One area at a time. That is hopefully the key to keeping organized and neat. Otherwise, its going to be a merry-go-round where I go from cleaning up one area only to come back to it after a while. What do you do to keep up with clutter in your home? Simplify Cooking Using High-Tech Gadgets

InfraWave At first, I thought simple and high-tech dont go together. How can a spage-age gadget be simple? Well, its not the appliances that are simple. In fact, a great deal of research and development has gone into the making of each one. However, they do promise to make life simpler for the typically modern family, whos said to spend more than 175 hours in the kitchen per month. Theyre not just cooking either. Theres lots more to do in the kitchen these days. For most, its where people congregate and catch up. Of course, the coffees there too. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has this list of technologies to make various kitchen tasks simpler:
  • Java Joy Machine
  • AeroGrows AeroGarden Kit (which Ive talked about here and here)
  • Computers for creating your own cookbooks
  • Infrawave Speed Oven by Black and Decker (shown above)
  • The Perfect Rice cooker

KitchenAid mixer sale KitchenAid mixer tangerineIf youre looking to get a KitchenAid stand mixer, like I did, theres a sale going on right now at Amazon.com. The KitchenAid KB26G1XTG Deluxe Edition 6-Quart Bowl Lift Stand Mixer, in Tangerine (color shown to the right), is currently listed at $210. This is 58% off from the regular price of $497, so this is a really great deal. I dont know when this sale will last, though.
