highlights

What are the different kinds of highlights available?
There are many different techniques, varying names and ways to do highlights. You have baliage, foil, painting, cap (but no one does that anymore - I hope!), full head, half head, chunking, fine, low lights and framing your face…..

What’s the difference? Which one is better? What should you choose?
These are all questions I hear all the time. I will try and help clarify what all these words mean for you.

Baliage and painting are basically the same thing in different words. It just means there is no foil involved and your colorist paints on highlights freehand. Because there is no foil involved you must use a higher volume peroxide and if not done correctly by a pro, can be very damaging to the hair. We all know what the cap is and I hope no one uses that anymore. Its painful and you have no creative control over the placement of highlights. All the rest are done with foil and are just different techniques and looks - it all really depends on what you’re going for. Half head or full head just really depends on how you like your hair. It’s a personal choice and framing the face is just a few highlights around your hairline and/or crown area. Also, I’d advise against “chunking” as it’s outdated and looks very harsh - it was very popular in the 90’s.
All these are different options and it all depends on the color and look you are going for.

So what’s in now for highlights? It’s all about tone on tone highlights, not fine or chunky but somewhere in the middle. It’s just to give dimension to the hair using many different tones in the same color family. That way hair doesn’t look solid or dense and always go for warmer tones, more golden than ash - it’s more youthful. Highlights should be fun not scary; they add contrast and spice up your color!

Hydrating Curls Conditioner
Curl Defining Scrunching Gel
Curl Defining Spray Gel
Curl Defining Scrunching Mousse
Curls Shaper Anti-Frizz Crme
Curl Lock Hairspray Flexible Hold Non-Aerosol

Read on for Danilo’s answers:

  1. Alexis & Briana:
Alexis: Q: How do you make curly hair curl better? Some days my hair gets big bouncy curls and other days, it lies flat?
Briana: Q: How do you make big curls out of flat wavy hair?A: First and foremost, 40%-50% of desired curl pattern can be achieved by using the best hair regime for your style needs. Pantene Pro-V Curls Shampoo and Conditioner not only enhance your hairs natural curl pattern, but also control frizz. When moving into drying I like to use an anti frizz serum or crme depending on hair density and texture. The Pantene Pro-V Frizz Control Extra Strength Serum is excellent for stronger, heavier hair, while the Restoratives Anti-Frizz Crme is good for all hair types including medium to fine hair. Both products are best initially applied to damp/towel dried hair, then combed and/or brushed through.
For extra form and hold a curl mousse like the Pantene Pro-V Curl Defining Scrunching Mousse provides a great styling finish with frizz free curl formation that can be scrunched or combed in.
  2. Julie
Q: I was wondering how you revive curls after a long day at work and youre heading out for the night? Mine always seems to go flat.A: The most important thing is to start with the right foundation, meaning the shampoo and conditioner you use.
If you want to bump up your flat wave after a long day at work, my advice would be to use an iron and my favorite styler, the Pantene Restoratives Anti-Frizz Crme. This styler takes the day out and puts the night in, which is just what you are looking for! If you have a loose wave after a day of wear, and you want more, take a medium iron or medium to large rollers and create a mixed curl look. Spiral set the rollers to create a more casual look.
  3. Nicole D. & Caitlin (WINNER OF PRIZE BASKET!)
Nicole Q: I have small curls (and very fine hair) that often frizz and come out looking a bit triangle-like on my head. What are some ways (and products) I can work product into my hair without weighing down the roots and getting enough coverage on the ends?
Caitlin: Q: My hair has a few natural (tight) curls when wet, but if i try to rock them after it dries it just ends up being a big frizzy mess. I dont know what products are best to use. Help!A: For starters there is nothing like added moisture to perk up a wave or curl. Pantene Pro-V Curl shampoo and conditioner products improve curl texture at the wet stage while the Pantene Pro-V Curl Shaper Anti-Frizz Crme and Pantene Curl Defining Mousse are excellent for curl form. These styling products provide you with less time fussing, less stress, and better results. Moisturizing products are key!
  4. Jane
Q: I have very long curly hair that I often throw up into a pony tail. Whats the best way to keep my hair off my neck without causing damage and breakage?

    A
: The best way to protect hair from damage and breakage is by using a restoratives line like the Pantene Pro-V Restoratives Breakage Defense Collection. The Breakage Defense Spray adds luster and protects your hair from styling damage by creating a strong base. The Detangling Leave-in Crme is also helpful for locking in moisture and protecting hair from breakage caused by combing and brushing. For the best results, I recommend applying both of these products to hair after washing and before styling.
My favorite way to keep hair off of your neck is with a high-style, sleek ponytail. As I suggested above, you must apply a Restoratives Breakage Defense Spray and Crme to protect strands from breakage. After you apply a styling crme to damp hair, blow-dry hair straight with a paddle brush. After drying, pull hair back into a ponytail and secure. Add a little more crme to the ends of hair to protect from frizz and go over with a blow-dryer one more time for an ultra-smooth finish.
  5. Linda
Q: I have neither straight, curly, nor wavy hair - its a frizzy mixture of all three! I want a great wavy look for night? Any suggestions?

    A
: The first secret to loose flowing, defined curls has to do with your curl source size. Try using an iron or medium to large rollers which create a loose wave. The next concern is the manner in which curls are wrapped around the rollers or iron. Try using a spiral set technique (the correct term for wrapping hair around the length of the heat source). To enhance the setting effort, use a mist of Volume Aerosol Hairspray.
  6. Lauren B.
Q: I have straight, straight, straight hair and I really, really, really want beachy waves. Anything Ive tried falls flat! Help! I want this to be my summer do!

    A
: Straight hair will generally reshape best going wet to dry. Its at the straight dry stage you are challenged by the already dried in straight finish. Setting wet hair under a dryer can be a whole new experience when coupled with state of the art products and equipment.
Otherwise when setting dry straight hair, one not only needs to re-shape with a medium size roller or iron, but it is also imperative that the hair cools completely in its new shape to ensure that the pattern sets and that there is no wilt or sag. On the work set sometimes I double set the hair to really get it in there.
For you, I highly recommend towel drying wet hair and applying leave in detangling lotion or the Pantene Restoratives Breakage Defense formula. After the leave in spray, wrap the hair with a medium roller or iron. Complete by misting each wrap with Pantene Pro-V Volume Aerosol hairspray for support and let your hair completely cool in its new shape.
  7. Krista
Q: I had beautiful natural curls and like an idiot I put a relaxer in my hair. Most of my curls have come back but there are sections of it that refuse to curl. How can I get my natural curl back?

    A
: First and foremost understand what you’ve used on your hair. Mild relaxers over time can allow natural movement to bounce back in since your hair wasnt completely reconfigured. Through deep cleansing and conditioning one can get back to the core of their hairs potential
After using a Purifying Shampoo (a great way to get remaining chemical damage out of the way), I suggest using the Pantene Time Renewal masque for 20 minutes. However if the chemicals are gone, its best to learn some easy setting preferences, be it with roller sets or curling irons.
I like to start the setting process by pre-washing/conditioning hair with Pantene Hydrating Curls hair care regime, which encourages curl pattern performance. After toweling excess water, apply a dollop of Pantene Restoratives Frizz Control Balm and comb through hair. Do the same with a little Curl Defining Scrunching Mousse. Finally, diffuse or naturally dry your hair. Once hair is dry, is the time to go in and address setting matching or alternating curl pattern (mixed roller or curling iron sizes) to smoothed areas.
Going forward I say consider a perm next time on large rods. This configures your curl a little larger and makes the versatility of styling much easier and more versatile.

Calling all ladies with sleek and straight locks…don’t think we’ve forgotten about you! Do you suffer from split ends? Greasy roots? A body-less bob? Fear no more…next week, Danilo will be answering straight hair-related questions (just because you don’t fight frizz doesn’t mean your inquiries aren’t mucho important)!

I Often dream of my ultimate (yet totally unrealistic) summer schedulelong days at the beach, and fun-filled evenings with friends. Though this agenda might seem relaxing and delicious, if my body behaves as it usually does, too much sun + late nights = dark under-eye circles the next morning. While there is no escaping weekdays at the office (alas, I continue to dream about sunshine and waves), I have found the supreme solution for dark eye-area problemsprminerals Intensive Eye Treatment. This powerful anti-aging treatment infuses intense hydration while reducing the appearance of dark circles. The serum features Occu-Derm, an inhibitor of accumulating hemoglobin in the dermis and epidermis around the eye that results in discoloration (in Laymans terms: bye-bye dark under-eyes circles, hello fresh-faced mornings!) Prminerals Intensive Eye Treatment also contains mineral salts, grape seed oil, Shea Butter and green and white tea extracts that not only revitalize, but also protect the delicate eye area.

Pr Tip: Occu-Derm does not only work to reduce dark under-eye circles, but wrinkles and creases alike! Apply morning and evening around the eyes (as well as forehead, brow, lips, frown lines and neck areas)!

Available at purminerals.com. $35.
