Onigiri HouseAT Asia

atla0718onigiri1.jpg"Onigiri" for those who may not be acquainted with the Japanese snack staple is rice formed into triangle or oval shapes, wrapped together with nori (seaweed). It's one of our favourite snacks, so we might have been bound to find an affinity for NKS Architect's Oita residence... atla0718onigiri0.jpg

atla0718onigiri2.jpgWhat's amazing about this cedar built home besides its unique shape is that it was designed not for some young modernist, but an elderly couple in a countryside village. Perhaps someone in Bakersfield will commission a US version shaped like a hoagie in similar spirit, but we don't think it would look quite as elegant. atla0718onigiri3.jpgMore photos of this light filled tubular home here, here and at the NKS Architects site.

The Gallery: Aquarabbit
By: Apartment Therapy    0 days 6 hours 46 minutes ago

7-18-aquarabbit.jpgWe've been huge fans of Aquarabbit (aka, Dana Robson) for years now. In a world full of chaos and sensory overload, her mixed media pieces (incorporating vintage book pages, maps, gocco, hand-stitching, canvas) of the natural world are subtle, gentle, and really lovely.

See more of her work here. The San Francisco-based artist's work is now for sale on one of our favorite sites, The Beholder. Some pieces are also available on Etsy. Convertible Bean Bag Chair from Bean2Bed
By: Apartment Therapy    0 days 8 hours 16 minutes ago
Channel: Living
7-18-08-bean2bed.jpg
The Bean2Bed operates like a bean bag chair, but it's filled with foam instead of "beans." And that foam is in the shape of a mattress, stuffed into a bag for sitting, but ready to pop into a bed for sleeping.

The removable, washable cover is faux suede, and we're wondering if the Bean2Bed does justice to either of its functions, or suffers from splitting the difference. We may never know, since right now the Bean2Bed is only available for shipping in Europe, for 225 here. But it's an interesting concept.
